Low Level Laser Therapy
Low-level laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or cold laser therapy, uses low-intensity lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at the infrared and visible red wavelengths to relieve pain and reduce inflammation caused by damaged tissue.
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is not a newly-discovered treatment. It was pioneered in the 1960s, and there are thousands of published studies documenting its effects in a range of medical and veterinary applications. Health professionals worldwide use low-level laser therapy to treat patients suffering from a range of conditions.
The low-level laser light particles, known as photons, penetrate the tissue through the skin to a specific depth depending on the wavelength. Typically, low-level laser devices use 600nm-1000nm (visible red-infrared) wavelengths.
My approach
Paula uses the low-level laser predominantly to relax muscle trigger points and settle irritable neural tissue. Much like dry needling, it can painlessly reduce muscle spasm and effectively ‘switch off’ the muscle so it can reset and regain its normal function. She has also found the laser helpful at treating nerve entrapments within the soft tissue. Sometimes even after the muscle has released, a nerve can still become ischemic (lack of blood flow) within the tension of the connective tissue. The low-level laser stimulates the flow of nutrition back to the nerve, helping it heal.
FAQs
Unlike surgical lasers, the intensity of the low-level laser is not high enough to produce heat, so it cannot burn or heat the skin.
Yes, it is perfectly safe; the only a few precautions are;
- Do not let the beam shine into the eyes.
- Pregnant women should not apply the device in the vicinity of the womb
- Do not use in the area of a pacemaker
- Treatment is not recommended in cancer cases
- Relaxing muscles in spasm
- Settling irritable nerve tissue
- Stimulation of blood flow
- Release tight attachment sites of muscles
